Health Care Refunds

During 2011 our clients received over $200,000 in refunds of the healthcare premiums paid for pastors and staff.

These refunds ranged from several thousand dollars to over $20,000 per church. Refunds generally equal 25% of the healthcare premiums paid.

According to the IRS “The small business health care tax credit was included in the Affordable Care Act enacted last year. Small employers [including churches] that pay at least half of the premiums for employee health insurance coverage under a qualifying arrangement may be eligible for the small business health care tax credit.”

And this credit is refundable – even to those organizations that pay no tax.
The government is encouraging eligible organizations to apply for their refunds. "We want to make sure that small business owners don't leave any money on the table,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “Small businesses that offer health insurance should learn about this credit and claim it if they are eligible."

Only 5% of eligible organizations applied for this money, according to the Inspector General of the US Treasury. Viewed from a stewardship point of view, US churches have not recovered millions of dollars that could be applied to Kingdome purposes.
