A New Way to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

In recent years, the IRS has noted an increase in the cases of identity theft related to taxes.  In an effort to help individuals protect their identity, the IRS has issued an opt-in program to receive a six-digit Identity Protection PIN to include with individual tax returns.

This could help protect you and your family from tax-related identity theft by preventing thieves from filing a fake return using your social security number. Previously these Identity Protection Pins were only available to individuals who had experienced identity theft, but starting in 2021 everyone is now eligible to opt-in.

This is a completely optional program that requires a rigorous identity verification process. The IP pin is only valid for one calendar year, must be used when filing your taxes, and a new IP PIN must be obtained every filing season. If you are interested in beginning the process, click here.

We’ve included additional resources from the IRS below regarding the IP PIN, including a quick video, an informational PDF, and a website for more information.
